How about rather than stopping the spawning of chests mimic chests are spawned instead. these mimic chests would do what mimic's do, biting survivors who open the chest and putting them in the dying state. so the scratched coin would now spawn one mimic, which of course when opened would be able to down a survivor before turning back into a normal closed chest.
