They will find other ways of giving up. The DC penalty is only making this people adjust their strategy.
What if their goal is punish others? What if the game is attracting people that enjoy punishing others?

Would we value Fun without Boredom? Fantasy without Reality?
We even could agree that there's also an in-between of Fun and Boredom.
DBD is like a roller coaster of emotional transitions. Maybe is cause the transitions are fast, maybe is cause the variety of triggers, the beautiful seats, the acceleration... how long is worth to experience all of this?
If the "right" answers are important to you, finding related specialists could be the best direction to follow.

I think many of us have a discoverer deep within.
Games arise the wonder like anything else in for obvious reasons, one of them being the illusion of experiencing the impossible.

What i would bring, one more time, is to not focus too much on other's actions or outcomes.
Is facing bully SWF not enjoyable by any means? Or the problem is focusing on the mocking, match result, disadvantage...
Why not see this as an opporunity to improve, to become better players? To have better emotional control?
Would we improve not facing disadvantages?

People have fun different ways, that's why i think it's hard to get to a consesus about changing a game mechanic based on fun.
Who's in right or responsible to define which mindsets have fun? Devs. Their design.
Now, can you change what makes you feel fun?
- If Yes or I don't know, focus on if your expectations are working against you. Relying on other's actions; be developers, killers, teammates... to have fun feels unhealthy.
- If no, find a game that fits better.
