How much time would BHVR need to develop their own engine for this game realistically?
This is more of a question I'm asking out of curiosity especially since while I know the game is janky and a mess with it's code but I don't know how deep the mess is but it'd be nice if it could run on its own engine that improved on both its performance and made it easier to manage perk changes through updates without any odd bugs then how long do you think it would take?
How long of a break between chapters would you be willing to give them as well if say it was possible for them to work on a health update to iron out plenty if not all bugs currently in the game?

They are doing basically what you are asking. They are currently going through the code and rewriting it to make the game more modern by its code and easier to make changes to it and add new modes and such. Writing a game engine does not always mean that engine will be anyway better than the Unreal engine they are currently using. Most games use already existing engines anyway as its faster than building one from scratch and if there even is any real benefit to have their own engine as it can also be problematic.
Not to mention the graphical upgrade that is also in the works with the code rewrite so they are currently working to bring the game to the current gaming level.
It's not the engine used… it's the way they coded the game from the start
Blueprints is good for like an alpha not for a full release game
When I think of games that developed their own engine I think of Halo Infinite, which was a huge failure. The engine wasn't any better than Unreal Engine, and in fact looked worse in a lot of aspects. I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason the game was delayed over and over, and I'm pretty sure some articles were saying that it was estimated to have cost them $300 million just to make the engine.
There's also Capcom, with their RE Engine. The modern RE titles have been sucesses across the board, I reckon.
Although there's absolutely no way BHVR has the resources that Capcom does.
Yeah, I mean between the two, I would definitely say BHVR is closer to being like 343 Studios (or Halo Studios as they're called now). Not even in terms of resources, but even just in terms of reliability. Capcom has a very good reputation for putting out consistently great games, while Halo Studios is known to put out mediocre or below average games. BHVR has only really had success with DBD, and although DBD is a huge success, their updates and new content within the game are often hit or miss. I don't think I'd trust a company like BHVR to be able to manage creating a new engine efficiently.
It doesnt seem like BHVR would have the needed experience to completely implement their own engine and its far more feasible that they use an existing one. And they are fortunately rewriting the game in a modern one right now.
Sure, an Engine just Built for the game would probably be more efficient and could be more reliable, but then Unreal/existing ones might bring features that might not have been thought about when designing the custom engjne and it gets Updates as well so it is a good trade Off if the resources are just not there.
Realistically? Decades.
The real question is why waste the money and time?
