Ghost Face Rework Concept — A New Phone-Based Reveal Mechanic 📞🔪

Ghost Face Rework Concept — Phone Mechanic

My idea for a Ghost Face rework is to keep the majority of his current kit the same while changing how Survivors reveal him. The goal is to make his gameplay feel more interactive, less frustrating, and more fitting for Ghost Face and the Scream franchise.

Night Shroud

Ghost Face’s Night Shroud would mostly remain unchanged.

While Night Shroud is active, Ghost Face is Undetectable and can stalk Survivors to build their Mark Meter. Once fully stalked, a Survivor becomes Marked and is Exposed as normal.

The main change would be how Survivors remove Ghost Face from Night Shroud.

Instead of simply looking at Ghost Face and instantly revealing him, spotting Ghost Face would begin a new mechanic called The Report.

The Report

When a Survivor successfully spots Ghost Face while he is using Night Shroud, they become a Witness.

To successfully reveal Ghost Face, the Witness must report that they spotted him by using one of several phones located around the Trial.

The Witness would have a limited amount of time to make the report, meaning they need to quickly decide whether to find a phone or continue running.

This makes spotting Ghost Face important, but doesn’t immediately shut down his power.

Trial Phones

Several phones would spawn around the map at recognizable locations.

The number of phones could depend on the size of the map:

  • Small maps: 4 phones
  • Medium maps: 5 phones
  • Large maps: 6 phones

Phones should be placed near important areas such as generators, buildings, or major landmarks so Survivors don’t have to search the entire map for one.

When a Survivor becomes a Witness, nearby phones could be highlighted to them so the mechanic doesn’t become a scavenger hunt.

Making the Call

The Witness interacts with a phone to begin making a call.

Once the call begins, another Survivor receives a ringing phone notification and has a short amount of time to answer.

If the Survivor answers the call, the Witness successfully reports Ghost Face.

A successful report would:

  • Immediately remove Ghost Face from Night Shroud.
  • Prevent him from activating Night Shroud for a short period of time.
  • Reveal Ghost Face’s aura to Survivors for a few seconds.

This gives Survivors a meaningful reward for successfully communicating and reporting Ghost Face.

Ghost Face Can Interfere

Ghost Face shouldn’t just be forced to wait while Survivors report him.

Whenever a Survivor begins using a phone, Ghost Face receives an indication that someone is attempting to make a call.

He doesn’t immediately know exactly where they are, but he can investigate and potentially stop the report.

Cut the Line

If Ghost Face reaches the active phone before the report is completed, he can use a special interaction called Cut the Line.

Cutting the line would:

  • Immediately stop the report.
  • Cause the Witness to scream.
  • Reveal the Witness’s aura to Ghost Face for a short period of time.
  • Allow Ghost Face to remain in Night Shroud.

This creates a situation where Ghost Face can actively defend himself instead of losing his power automatically.

Intercepting Calls

I also think Ghost Face could potentially interfere with the Survivor receiving the call.

If Ghost Face successfully intercepts the call before the other Survivor answers, the report fails.

The Survivor who answers could potentially have their aura revealed briefly to Ghost Face, giving him information without making the mechanic too punishing.

This would also create a really fitting Ghost Face moment where Survivors aren’t always completely sure what will happen when the phone rings.

Counterplay

Survivors would still have several ways to deal with Ghost Face.

  • Spotting him gives them the ability to report him.
  • They can quickly locate nearby phones.
  • Teammates can answer calls to help complete reports.
  • Other Survivors can potentially distract Ghost Face while the Witness makes the call.
  • If Ghost Face starts pursuing the Witness, they can abandon the report and focus on escaping.

The goal isn’t to make Ghost Face impossible to reveal. The goal is to make revealing him more interactive and less automatic.

Why I Think This Would Improve Ghost Face

Currently, Ghost Face’s reveal mechanic can sometimes feel inconsistent or frustrating for both sides.

Survivors can accidentally reveal him simply by looking in his direction, while Ghost Face can lose his entire power almost instantly.

This rework would turn revealing Ghost Face into an actual interaction.

A Survivor spots Ghost Face.

They realize they need to report him.

They rush to a phone.

Another Survivor’s phone starts ringing.

Ghost Face realizes someone is trying to expose him and can hunt them down before they complete the call.

I think this would make Ghost Face feel much more like Ghost Face while keeping the core gameplay that makes him unique.

The stalking, stealth, crouching, and Mark mechanics would remain intact, but the reveal mechanic would become more interactive, strategic, and heavily inspired by the phone calls that are such an iconic part of Scream.

Comments

  • I'm mixed on this idea. On one hand, I think the idea is very thematic and would definitely make it harder to reveal Ghostface (which is currently insanely easy to do). On the other hand, as one of my mains, I like the simplicity of his kit. In addition, although this helps with him not being constantly revealed, there are more straightforward options, and this doesn't address the core issue with Ghostface: he has zero chase power.

Even if you mark a survivor, sometimes there's just not much you can do in 60s (or 70s with his brown addon). Obviously it's worse if you're constantly being revealed and having to m1 chase without the survivor even being marked, but the fact remains. Even though Myers is now not very on brand, power scaling wise he has both the ability to instadown and a means to do so (the dash). Maybe if Ghostface's crouch was faster that could be his way of securing kills at a pallet? By mindgaming? (I do this already, but the fact that it's 4.0m/s kills it sometimes). I'm not really sure.

I think I would be more down for this idea on a new killer. If the Black Telephone was in the game I think something similar to this would be awesome, although I don't know if we really want to bring a pedophile killer into the game.
