Level by playing a character
I just started playing the game and love it. One thing that I find weird is that you don't really need to play a character to level it and earn it's perks. This is good but also a little bit disappointing.
I think it would be cool if you got like 1 level for each match you play with that character. Then you have an incentive to play with that character as you unlock it's perks.

It was that way on the mobile game (that is now closed). And though it felt like you were progressing more with your character, it also felt rather restictive as sometimes you don't want to constantly play just that one character for thousands of rounds in a row to reach prestige100, especially on killers as the more you play, the harder the game gets as winning boosts your matchmaking rating higher, until it reaches the same level of other players that constantly win. each killer has their own matchmaking rating, but survivors are shared across the whole roster, which can make playing multiple killers feel somewhat easier rather than playing the 1 killer the entire time and reaching the point of much harder players.
Currently you do gain xp through playing, and it goes towards your devotion level. Its not a level thats shown off or seen by anyone, but its how you gain the blue shards for unlocking unlicensed characters and outfits without having to buy auric cells.
if i wanted jeffs perks i wouldnt want to play with his loud breatheing the entire time and give me away, also if that was the case , what would even be the point of blood points if you just passively level up by playing a charecter, you dont need bloodpoints for the blood web
This is why P100 is not a reflection of skill, its just how many hours you sink into the game. Someone can p100 nurse having never played a single killer match in their life with any killer.
@Microwave126 You can still do both. It's just in addition to leveling with bloodpoints for players that want to play that character
