Why does the design team like unflattering and forgettable (non-licensed) characters?
TLDR: For character design going forward, maybe try a bit more for flattering looks or more badass factor. Too many of the unlicensed characters are forgettable.
so this goes for both genders and my proof really is that you guys can pull off attractive and good looking licensed characters (because you're forced to, HAHA). You have licensed thirst traps like Ada Wong, Steve, Leon, etc - all of these have pretty good silhouettes and immediately look attractive. But for some reason, you don't like doing it for your non-licensed characters? Why?
Yun Jin Lee…..not great. I get you want different body shapes but Yun Jin looks so weird. It's like you're trying to make her overweight but she's not at the same time. So she has big hips right? But then you purposely make all of her outfits and etc ruin the hour glass figure. It's extra weird for her because shes south korean and working in the Kpop industry. You think she wouldn't have gotten some plastic surgery and a personal trainer? Or fashion? If you google "South Korean women street fashion" you can see all the "everyday people" of seoul. You also made Yun Jin pretty old and haggered looking. Botox is $10 a syringe there. You're leaning into the whole kpop thing but you don't want to at the same time (besides trickster) doesn't make sense.
It would be a different story if you just had COOL characters for either gender but nope. Ace Visconti and Jeff Johansen? I used to live in Alberta. No one looks like Jeff Johansen lmao. I get you were going for the rural Canadian Biker gang look but he really doesn't pull it off. He's missing something. Just like Yun Jin Lee. You need to give Jeff an actual menacing look. Someone that actually screams "MECHANIC" or "BIKER". He just looks like some unkempt dude. Seriously, a beer belley guy with ripped arms in a tank that screams "HELLS ANGELS" would have been a better Jeff. Instead you have him in his fast food outfit cause….thats what he really looks like…a middle aged fast food worker… 😓
As for obvious thirst traps like Mikaela, Sable, Vittorio….This is a step in the right direction but then you make it a bit….too obvious? Like Sable? Ughhh… literally a loli goth. I think someone who is a missed opportunity really was Yun Jin or Meg or Jeff. They don't have to be bomb shells, but there are tons of good looking Olympians, KPOP managers, and Bikers. I think Vittorio and Skull Merchant is a step in the right direction. They don't always have to be super sexy or bomb shells, but I don't think it hurts to have some "Badass sexy" factor to them (i.e. Skull Merchant). When it's overtly done and shallow (like Sable) its really lame and an obvious cash grab.
These are bikers. Your own bio page for Jeff paints him as a bad ass metal dude who rides bikes with bad ass biker babes. He is not that.
