Make DBD Fun Again
Dead By Daylight is never gonna be an e-sports game for understandable reasons, unless you remove the asymmetrical element out of the equation (no offence, really) and not even a sort of simulator (been reading a lot of discussions about the realism narrative as an excuse to nerf/buff something as their liking), so my suggestion is to just focus on making the game fun for everyone from beginners all the way up to veterans (sadly a lot of'em did quit DBD).
*DISCLAIMER*
This is from my POV, it is what I think and I am also taking into account other people's opinion on this. I want to be constructive and I sincerely wish the better for this game (the one and only I played for more than 1k hrs - started playing in 2019 when Demo was getting to DBD) but I can't see it in a positive way in its current state and where it is going. Don't want to open the usual Killers vs Survivor biased type of post. I just would like what the title say to be realized for the good of all of us DBD players.
*END OF DISCLAIMER*
So let's analyze why the game is not more fun(IMO):
As a survivor the fun part could be:
- getting chased
- winning mindgames, jukes
- saving teammates (flashlight/pallet save)
- doing some stealth plays sometimes
As a killer the fun part could be:
- winning mindgames, countering jukes
- killing a single survivor in the early game(for some) [due to the killer taking into account the upcoming pressure]
- splitting the attention on each survivor (for others)
- doing nice plays using the killer power (curves as billy/oni, stealthy plays as ghostface/myers and so on...)
- HAVING MORE TIME to do chases and everything without feeling so much pressure (we should not forget it's still a game...for now).
THE CORE PROBLEM
Survivors just do gens as fast as possible since its pointless and not enjoyable getting penalized in a chase mainly because of Bloodlust and deadzones (specifically on some maps we all know). This turn the game into a rush or die aka m1 simulator that is BORING FOR SURVIVORS and BORING AND STRESSFUL FOR KILLERS.
This will lead to a common result for both sides: less time.
Less time to have fun and more time doing the two boring things of this game:
- camp and tunnel for Killers
- genrush for Survivors
SOLUTION
"Incentivize" Survivors on getting chased instead of being stealthy or glued to the gens and for the experienced ones looking for the killer to get chased. Everything that will make the game less stressful or feel like it is a matter of life and death. Now that gen time has been increased and more slowdown perks have been released could be more easy to balance the game to be FUN for both sides.
Clearly to achieve this some things have to change:
- Remove the Bloodlust mechanic.[1]
- Fill deadzones with some tiles (not necessarily with pallets, TL walls will be sufficient).
- Put back some fun parts that have been/are going to be removed listed below:
- REVERSE PALLET STUN: this was not giving an advantage to survivors, just a cool trick to do. A little bit annoying as killer tho.
- LOCKER FLASHLIGHT SAVES: finding duos that abuse this mechanic it's fairly rare, but was really satisfying to hit those (not abusing but hitting some saves here and there). IMPORTANT It can be made not abusable but still doable by giving the killer flashlight immunity while opening a locker for 30 seconds after a successful save. This will make so a Survivor getting grabbed from the locker and saved by a flashlight will trigger the Killer's blindness immunity for 30 seconds.
- FLASHLIGHT SAVES: after the 6.4.0 that's coming soon it would be no more satisfying cause of the buffer that make it impossible to miss let's be honest.[2]
- THE MORE BALANCED KILLER as stated by BHVR and THE MOST FUN™ KILLER TO PLAY AGAINST/AS according to the Dead by Daylight community that is Hillbilly, could be revived by a small rework, making the chainsaw overheat only when in a range (10-12-14 ? meters) of a hooked survivor, since this change was pushed due to the camping billys.
- [This is an additional idea] Not considering 2 kills as a draw and 4k as a win but actually make use of the end game "Did you have fan" meter as a significant data and maybe adding some features to it to give an opinion on what was fun and what annoyed the specific player that is filling the report.
Of course there are still other things to add to the list but for now I think that's all.
This was a genuine post from a player who wants this game to be better and MORE FUN™™™.
Please do not blast me or I'll not be able to sleep.
Footnotes:
- [1]Not to mention that Bloodlust was introduced, as a temporary mechanic/fix, in 2017 when infinites where a thing.
- Before its buff, could have been acceptable in order to counter the bad map design(infinites) that is thankfully gone, now it's only a robbery to good chasers who can gain small time spans during some phases while looping tiles.
- [2]My personal thought: they did this change cause a lot of newcomers have been complaining about it being too difficult. When I was a beginner too I spent a lot of time and threw a lot of matches trying to save my team mates with the flaslight and learning its timing. I don't get this honestly it feel like it's now a flat game, no need for skill just m1, throw pallets, die by bloodlust, get rushed etc...
Comments
If you agree that the not-at-all-fun part of DBD is :
- Camp
-Tunnels
- GenRush
It is only these elements that must be modified and nothing else (unless ..)
And none of the solutions that you propose corrects the 3 points mentioned.
Absolutely no removal of Bloodlust. The entire point of that mechanic is to end infinite loops, or near infinite loops. No survivor should be able to 'run the killer for 5 gens", and people who think that is a good idea better rechange their stance on Facecamping because that is what you are gonna get if chases are pointless.
Survivors are intended to go down in chase. It's a matter of when you go down, not if. A killer is expected, if he placed "fair" and/or "nice", to get 12 hooks. Bloodlust is a necessary game mechanic if you want any semblance of that.
There are some RNG outcomes where the idea of 'git gud' goes out the window.... possibly due to three instantly connecting windows, leading to shack.
People that want Bloodlust removed just want the old 3-5 minute chases back, which were bad for the game.
