Is the Shrine of Secrets just Plausible Deniability for Pay to Win?
The Shrine of Secrets is an awful mechanic for a few reasons.
- It only ever features 4 perks.
- It usually only refreshes once per week.
- It has a pool of ~177 perks and this pool is always growing.
- Perks from free characters like Jake still appear in the Shrine to water down the pool.
- Perks from licensed chapters do not appear in the Shrine in the year after its release.
- Its functionality for converting iridescent shards to bloodpoints was bad and was made even worse with 6.1.0.
Because the Shrine exists BHVR can claim perks are free. Employees like Mandy can say stuff like: "Perks are free, they can be unlocked through BP on the bloodweb by levelling up characters or through the Shrine with in-game currency."
I just think the Shrine is a horrible and outdated mechanic that was made primarily so BHVR can claim perks are free. Employees can say stuff like: "Perks are free, they can be unlocked through BP on the bloodweb by levelling up characters or through the Shrine with in-game currency." Long after its creation it developed a side benefit of helping people get perks needed for archive challenges.
Rest assured, if you want to play with any of the 9 perks from Chapter 25 over the next year you will have to pay with real money to get them.
Disclaimer: I don't actually think DbD is Pay to Win.
