Dear BHVR, please confirm or correct these statements about how MMR&SBMM currently work

There seems to be tacit knowledge among a majority of players but once someone asks "where did BHVR actually explicitly make that statement?" it's quite difficult to point to something tangible. While MMR&SBMM have not remained unchanged in the past and will probably undergo some changes at some point I think it would be great to have clarity on MMR&SBMM as it is now (Patch 6.1.1).

On raising/lowering MMR:

1) For killers only kills lead to their MMR rising. For survivors only escapes lead to their MMR rising.

2) For killers only survivors escaping leads to their MMR lowering. For survivors only being killed leads to their MMR lowering.

3) Hatch is neutral and is not affecting MMR.

4) DCs during the match are ignored and do not affect the MMR of anyone in the lobby.

5) Matches being cancelled due to a dc while loading into the match are ignored and don't affect MMR of anyone in the lobby.

6) Survivors being consumed by the entity after the egc timer runs out count as a kill for the killer and as being killed for the survivor.

7) Each survivor counts individually. How many other survivors escape or are killed does not matter. (e.g. A escapes. B, C, D are killed. A's MMR increases. B's, C's, D's MMR decreases.)

8) Each kill and escape is counted individually for killer. More Kills in one match lead to a greater increase in MMR. (e.g. Four survivors killed (+4) leads to a greater MMR increase than three survivors killed (+3) and one survivor either DCing or escaping through hatch (0). Two survivors killed (+2), two escaped through exit gates (-2) is a net draw for that match while two survivors killed (+2), one having escaped through the exit gates (-1) and one through hatch (0) would result in the killer's MMR rising.)

9) Match points, points in pip-categories and pips themselves do not affect MMR. (i.e. Hooks, injuries, interruptions, power uses, downs etc. for killer. Unhooks, heals, repairing generators, destroying totems, holding chase etc. for survivor.)

On the matchmaking process:

10) The matchmaking only takes MMR into account.

11) When queing up the search for a match starts at the MMR value each player has. Ideally, matchmaking finds five people with the exact same MMR value.

12) If there are not enough players with the exact same MMR value, the values that are taken into account by matchmaking expand to both higher and lower values: player MMR value +/- X. This happens for both killers and survivors.

13) "+/- X" increases over time. Once the expanded search radius of a player covers the MMR value of another player and vice versa they are matched. (i.e. in a lobby the search radius of every individual player covers the actual MMR value of each other player in the lobby.)

14) There is no precise information available to players on how far the MMR value expands or how quickly it does so.

15) There is a soft cap at the lowest and highest end, meaning that while your MMR value can still increase or decrease matchmaking will treat you as if you had the MMR value of the soft cap.

16) There is no "MMR decay": even if a player does not play for a long time their MMR value remains the same.

Additionally, some dev-updates imply that the MMR is "tweaked behind the scenes all the time" and without the players knowing. Is this correct? And if so, is it to a degree where an above statement would become (temporarily) untrue? (I would assume it's minor tweaks, e.g. by how much exactly MMR increases/decreases, how far and fast the search expands etc.)

Thank you for taking your time reading through all of this.

To fellow players: if you like the idea of having one place you can point to if someone asks about 'where you heard that' consider dropping a comment; Since posts are probably not monitored 24/7 it will otherwise just disappear into the void of 'page x in recent discussions' too quickly ^^

  • I would appreciate confirmation of this as well, since it all rings true to me but matchmaking sometimes feels weird, and I'll be queued against people with 900% more gametime than I.

I also wonder how matchaking deals with people of different mmrs queueing together.
