DC penalties are worse than nothing. They actively increase the harm a RQ does to a game.

DC Penalties for Survivors vs Killers are different beasts (though neither of them are particularly good).

On survivors, you can argue that they are at least slightly improve average match quality, because by forcing a RQ player to kill themselves instead of just leaving in under a second, you force the player to wait a couple seconds and cool down a bit.

If they decide to go through with ditching because they saw their entire team crouched in a corner doing nothing, the threat of DC penalties didn't help any, but it at least did no harm.

For killers, it's a different beast.

Okay, lets say this prospective RQ encounters the same team under two conditions, identical except for the presence of DC penalties.

In a version of DBD with no DC penalties...

  • The killer leaves the game
  • All survivors are booted from the trial instantly
  • Everybody in on their way immediately and can queue up for another game, mildly annoyed that the 60 seconds they spent in queues were wasted.

With DC penalties...

  • The killer faces a wall, tabs out, and boots up Minecraft.
  • Due to the killer being gone, there is no longer any gameplay for survivors to experience whatsoever... but they're still stuck in the trial until they finish the gens.
  • The killer tabs back in 6 minutes later after building a nice dirt hut. His experience wasn't significantly reduced since he got the full experience of something else in that span, but the survivors are bored out of their minds.

With NO DC penalties, a killer's RQ wastes the queue time plus any time spent in game, so probably about two minutes.

With DC penalties, a killer's RQ wastes the queue time plus the time spent in game up to that point, plus all the time remaining on the gens, probably around eight total minutes.

Frankly, I hope those cheaters find a way to exploit this system again, because forcing BHVR to disable DC penalties just makes the game better.
