My guess why Object of Obsession seems to be fine according to the dev's stats

In case someone doesn't know what I'm talking about: The devs explained in their Q&A stream 2 days ago why OoO doesn't seem to be too problematic for them. Here's their answer from Karu's stream summary (Thanks for your summary btw. @GoodBoyKaru):

"OOO is one of those really thematic perks, that works well with the chapter they were released with (Myers and Strode). Looking at the stats alone, it's not used very often, and those people that do use it don't exactly escape very often, so it doesn't seem like an amazingly effective perk. But, like Lightborne, it's a perk where you pick something for it to do, and make it do it well. Having a high escape rate is less important than it being functional and fills a particular gameplay niche. Plus, OOO paired with Sole Survivor has a really nice syngergy too.

This means it's a perk that will probably be left as-is, unless some statistics appear otherwise to make them believe otherwise that there's a deep problem with it. The complaints from the forums are that OOO is overpowered whilst the stats say underpowered, so the team is inclined to believe that it's a perception issue, more than with the perk itself. (Ethan)

However, remember that the devs do take fun into consideration too. Whilst the experience of the devs may be different to yours, they do take on feedback. Make sure it's civil and constructive, because that is valued significantly more than scathing insults, and head to this hyperlink to provide the feedback. It is looked at by the dev team, and forwarded by mods, contrary to what many people may believe."

I think the main reason why OoO's stats look like this, is that most of the killers want to punish survivors with OoO just for using this perk, even when they have to throw the game. Some killers expect 2 kills or something like that but after realizing there's an object a few of them are just like "Ok as long as the object is dead at the end I don't care". It creates so much heat. You could say "heh, just don't chase the object" but every killer's movement can be called out by the object if they're in a party, so mindgaming other survivors becomes almost impossible on several tiles. Not to mention killers like trapper suffer a lot against object. Besides, the community made more than enough suggestions to work with. What about Otzdarva's suggestion where a chased survivor with object reveals his aura and also shares a speed boost for various actions to his mates? What if object only works if both the survivor and killer are looking at each other's direction? @Diggly's idea could also be a great change where you're seeing the killer's aura for a few seconds, if the killer is able to see your aura. Whichever idea you prefer, the current Object of Obsession results to giant toxic behaviour and frustrations from my experience.

In simple terms, OoO's stats aren't reliable in this case to justify the current version of this perk imo.

  • I mean, it's not just that; OoO users are often more cocky and get themselves into trickier situations where everyone else lives while the OoO user dies. In recent memory, all the OoO users I've faced die just before the game finishes, whether after all other survivors are dead or after other survivors have escaped.

The killer gets to have very limited options on who to chase, and with less chase resources around, going after the OoO user makes the most sense.
