Consistency

So in recent times there has been a new claim to keep everything consistent.

Well this is is a nice concept it doesn't really take into account that not everything is created equally when it comes to killers and powers.

So I'm going to explain why I personally feel like behaviour is doing consistency wrong.

Secondary basic split

A while back there was a defined change to what would be considered a basic attack and what would be considered a secondary attack this also split a lot of perks to only affect basic attacks not secondary.

Sloppy Butcher

Franklin's demise

Any exposed base perks

And one of the only relatively good outcomes of this change being Save The Best For Last

Now certain powers not talking these perks made sense it would come off as rather frustrating to have a huntress hatchet knock you down because of haunted grounds.

However there was never really a call to action for things like ambush instadown in you in the similar scenario

Mainly because ambush and hatchets are not two powers that are on equal footing

Not only do hatchets have range but they have the capabilities of countering a lot of defences that survivors have ambush doesn't do this.

To keep up with consistency of these powers what made so they both can't proc certain perks which in the grand scheme of things doesn't work because as I stated before ambush is nowhere near as powerful or as threatening as a hatchet.

In terms of power a Hatchet never needed to proc any of these effects because it was such a strong force to begin with ambush is not a strong forced so it activating these perks wasn't an issue

Frenzy

Probably one of the most controversial changes of the secondary basic split something that even The Devs themselves have admitted that it was not necessarily the best thing or smartest idea for Legion but chose to do it anyway because of consistency.

See the problem with trying to make all the powers consistent in triggering elements is that you tend to forget that in terms of lethality and usefulness of these powers aren't consistent with each other.

Ambush activating perks was never a problem because ambushing itself was not overwhelmingly powerful.

Huntress hatchets on the other hand not popping most of these effects was understandable I had it could already be so game-changing it's not activating certain perks made sense.

Demogorgon shred is a lot more consistent and effective than Amanda's ambush so it would be understandable if it didn't proc certain effects

Legion frenzy was non lethal but very easy to hit and apply so it's not triggered anything that involved insta downs was understandable however due to its non-lethal nature it activating things like sloppy butcher, third seal and more are completely understandable.

consistency itself can be very useful and make overall game design easier however when it comes to game balancing it doesn't exactly help.

The powers themselves aren't on a consistent level of effectiveness, lethality and threat for them to all be painted with the same brush when it comes to what they can and cannot activate.

Now there are two relative options

Focus on each power in an individual basis

Looking and how the power is in gameplay and seeing what perks it should trigger and what perks it shouldn't.

Sounds nice but this could potentially lead to wait in for a situation where a lot of work has to be put in with each new perk or slight tweak added

Or

Group categorise powers

All powers that fall under a certain group will Trigger or not trigger certain things.

For example than never lethal category

Be able to trigger all perks with their power with the exception of anything will cause instadown.

This is where legion and potentially similar characters can fit in.

Stage 3 lethality

These are all the powers that could be extremely lethal and effective so they wouldn't trigger a lot of perks besides maybe sloppy butcher or remember me

Huntress and plague would fall under this category.
