Revisiting The Ghost Face and My Changes (+ Add-On and Perk Tweaks)

About a month ago, with my second DBD forum post, I suggested some changes that I thought would be beneficial to playing as and against The Ghost Face. While I think the post was a little controversial, I think no one really seemed to explain why my proposed changes wouldn't be helpful to Ghost, and instead seemed to focus on one of my points, so with more experience and varied play, as well as more feedback, I am back again, going over The Ghost Face, in order to make a better, more concise argument for the proposed changes.

(Heads up! This is not overhauling the basis of what The Killer does. I'm keeping the basics of power and changing up the way that The Killer and survivors can interact with it.)

Here are the main issues facing The Ghost Face (GF):

  • Night Shroud is not always reliable in a chase
    • Oh boy, this was the contentious one. Allow me to better explain. While Night Shroud CAN help you in a chase provided that neither GF or the survivor can see each other in a loop, this is not always the case, as there are many loops where the survivor can see you, and sometimes you won't have the ability to even use your power in these situations if a survivor cancels it beforehand. Though mind games with Night Shroud can be useful, these situations arise few and far between.
  • the Reveal mechanic
    • The revealing process is extremely janky on both ends. Not only is it far too fast with a heavy penalty, but it's also really iffy, sometimes working from halfway across the map from behind a tree, and other time GF can't be revealed when you're right in front of him.
  • stealth killer < normal terror radius
    • Night Shroud's effect encourages you to sneak up close to survivors, but the large terror radius of GF is counter-productive, as you will either have to activate the power a far distance from survivors, which reduces your movement speed heavily until you can get to a close angle, using a lot of time, or get up close immediately, which risks survivors being able to cancel your power and get away.
  • survivors can hear when Night Shroud is active
    • A smaller problem, but attentive survivors will benefit from it. Survivors being able to hear when Night Shroud activates pretty much announces GF's presence, and again, he's a stealth killer. Not good.

Now that I've clarified my points, here's the rundown of some changes I'd like to see. With more data and play-testing, I realized that just minor tweaks are needed.

Stalking CHanges:

  • change distance / rate of stalking (currently: stalks at 20 stalk points per second, 40 for lean and stalk)
    • from 40-30 meters, GF stalks at 15 points per second
    • from 30-15 meters, GF stalks at 25 points per second
    • from 15 meters or less, GF stalks at 30 points per second
    • all values doubled when leaning and stalking
  • stalk rate is reduced by 50% while in a chase
  • stalking does not reset until the survivor is downed

Adding a "risk/reward" factor to GF's gameplay is really interesting, as you have the option of slowly and safely stalking from the shadows or exposing survivors quick and dirty. Confident GF players will really benefit from this change, and those learning will be encouraged to be more comfortable when getting up closer to survivors.

Reveal Changes:

  • survivors must be within line-of-sight of GF and within 32 meters of him in order to Reveal him, as well as see at least 40% of his body (about the amount of him that's visible when leaning and stalking) for 2.5 seconds
    • survivors will be given a 32 meter beam pointed in the direction they're facing with a five meter width
  • downed and hooked survivors can no longer Reveal GF

Seeing as the Revealing mechanic is really janky due to it being tied to the camera and isn't entirely accurate, having it instead be tied to the front of your character with their own "Sniper Doctor-like" revealing beam or red stain (invisible of course) would be much more simple and responsive. The Reveal was also far too fast for GF to react in many cases, so giving him an extra second is needed. Survivors can easily abuse the camera to knock out GF's power. Requiring them to be more attentive and mindful of their placement and surroundings seems much more fair.

General Tweaks:

  • decrease base Night Shroud recovery time to 20 seconds
  • decrease GF's base terror radius to 24 meters
  • remove survivors' ability to hear Night Shroud activation

Having a power as easy to disable as Night Shroud when the killer is so reliant on it shouldn't take 30 seconds to recovery, as the killer then has to rely on the add-on to reduce the recovery time. Since his power is also pretty easy to disable and he's a stealth killer, he shouldn't have such a large terror radius. Reducing it gives GF more of a chance to sneak when he cant use his power. Finally, the ability for survivors to hear Night Shroud gave them too much of an unfair early warning if they were attentive. GF shouldn't be punished for using his power as intended.

So, hopefully this time around, these changes seem better, a lot less drastic, and retains the general play on both ends. Tell me what you think!
