Evan's father and the Miners.
Seems to be a battle, his father being ruthless, trying to teach him to stand up for himself and to follow his ideology, the men who work in the mine want to use you, they are vermin, rats, cruel and vile, Evan wants to stand up against his father but worries about speaking out and might be scared to, it shows that Evan is rebellious towards him.
Now my thoughts are:
Is Evan really as bad as he's perceived as a Killer?
He had good intentions, a solid frame of mind, he shows empathy for the miners, people theorize that he's been framed, but what I think from his life, he's had constant obstacles to detest him, to throw him off path, what he's been through really changes a person, and not for good. The entity even furthers the path of challenge he's faced by how the entity tortured him.
