If it were BHVR's call I'd imagine such wouldn't be the case, but it is not and it's not like they see any form of profit from said online subscriptions.
I understand that they finally didn't do something stupid, but still, a petition or something would be great

Now multiple that by millions. There's your reason online play has a subscription. (It's really not even that much... $20 for a year which is $1.60 a month. Or $35 for a family plan that allows 8 players on it. Which is $0.36 a month per person...)
And for PS+ and Xbox Gold, don't forget about the thousands of dollars of free games they give out each year to everyone.
then why pc version are completely subscriptionless?
they would have done that there too, so, i'm not paying 20 bucks a year to use basic functions on my system

I agree it’s stupid. But I don’t think BHVR can really do something in this regard as it’s Nintendo‘s platform and they probably designed it this way.
I mean, it would be nice to know if you could still get the game playable or at least get into the menu without the subscription.
And tbh, free games can be played but not paid games? it would be good to know if it's something that nintendo chooses or bhvr does
