And I have to wonder how much of this model might be because they've obviously taken a financial bath on Deathgarden. Which also makes me wonder if this might not be the new event model moving forward. Right now, DBD is the only cash cow they can milk.
I don't mind them milking DBD as a cash cow, especially if their primary method of milking us for money is by releasing more killers. I feel like pulling a stunt like this is a bad direction, though.
I was talking about stunts like this. I don't personally consider KIller/Survivor DLCs as milking.
Oh. Well, I do, but I think those kinds of releases are good for the health of the game. Stunts like this? Definitely not. I'll probably never be excited for an event from BHVR again.

As a further thought, after uncapping the limits on the vials, BHVR could've said that the option to get the new skins (by play or by purchase) would end with the event. They could've said the skins MIGHT be available in the future, but that they would NEVER be available again via an event OR AT THE REDUCED PRICES that they are being offered during the event.
This sort of explanation creates perceived value in the players via market scarcity. Players who couldn't complete enough vials to unlock everything would feel compelled to purchase the rest.
Bam! BHVR makes more money on sales AND the player base is happier because they feel like they're getting stuff for free or they're making the choice to buy what they don't have the time to play to get at a discount.
See how this PR stuff is supposed to work?
If, if they offered them at a steep discount during the event-- 75% off-- I would probably think really hard about buying some of them. 50% would make me feel hesitant, but I'd probably buy 1 just because discount. 25%? Yeah, right. Mhm. Real generous.
But you're right, offering a discount goes a long way towards getting that dollar. In general, scarcity improves the value-- but artificial scarcity is a lot harder to work with. We KNOW BHVR is setting the prices for all of these things internally, without showing us any figures like-- how many people normally buy a cosmetic? How much does it cost to make a 4K cosmetic set? I assume it costs a week's wages to make a 4K cosmetic, 1000$, but if ten thousand people buy each and every cosmetic then it ought to have a price that reflects the cost properly, something like 1$ each or 2$ each.
Lootbox games like Overwatch get away with scarcity by also artificially imbalancing the scales-- however, they actually make their cosmetics more rare than other cosmetics and not just labeled 'rare'. I hate lootboxes, but they're a really good example of how to actually create scarcity and not just arbitrarily determine how scarce something is.

The cosmetics cost 10$ each. That's two hours of work for me, with taxes accounted for. I can't use this money on food, on phone bills, on internet, on other games or on rent. I have bought every DLC and I actually think the packs like Bloodstained Sack had a 'fair' value to them-- 3$ for 8 cosmetic items that are actually nice to look at? I feel like .20 is definitely fair for a cosmetic. 3$ per cosmetic part, 10$ for a whole outfit? It's really not fair.

Slippery slope arguments have to terminate somewhere, though. If I had, for example, BHVR's word that every October would be another Hallowed Blight and we'd have a chance to earn more vials, or that every July was a BBQ, and the event lasted a whole month and we got in-game currency every time to purchase new sets which would be updated every year, I could feel more confident about this event and excited for the future. Instead, it seems to be screaming to me that I'll never be able to afford to have every outfit, even with the money I earn. That every event will be an excuse to pawn off new cosmetics only available with auric cells. I bought the game. I've bought all the DLC. I've bought every clothing pack they've released. But this event leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

There is no reason to cap the number of vials that players can earn during the Hallowed Blight event. Why? Because the Event is already capped by TIME. You can't get any more vials after Nov. 2.The reward after you have earned the cosmetics is a buttload of bloodpoints. That is the reward to continue playing.
Only if someone makes the offering though, right? We're not getting double bloodpoints.

Honestly, I hate lootboxes but if they offered 4 cosmetic parts in an incrementally scaling lootbox I had to play many games to get, I'd actually be satisfied with the event. To be clear: I quit Overwatch because you could only get things in lootboxes and I'd still rather have that than this.

I read you, RuneStarr. I think you made a lot of good points in your response.
