I think this is a bug. I didn’t see this change listed as an intentional feature in any patch, so it looks like something slipped through.
There’s no reason for alternative maps to reduce the spawn chances of other realms. There are 20 realms in total. Here’s an example of how the probabilities could work:
Probability per variation= (1 / number of variations) × (1 / number of maps in the realm) × (1 / number of realms)
Realm
Map
Variations
Probability per variation
Silent Hill
Mildiwitch School
1
1/1 × 1/1 × 1/20 = 0.05
Racoon City
RPD West
1
1/1 × 1/2 × 1/20 = 0.025
Racoon City
RPD East
1
1/1 × 1/2 × 1/20 = 0.025
Ormond
Lake Mine
1
1/1 × 1/2 × 1/20 = 0.025
Ormond
Resort
3
1/3 × 1/2 × 1/20 ≈ 0.0083
SpringWood
Badham Preschool
5
1/5 × 1/1 × 1/20 = 0.01
Explanation:
- Each realm keeps its total 1/20 chance to spawn, regardless of how many maps or variants it contains.
- Maps inside a realm divide that 1/20 chance among themselves.
- Variants inside a map should only split that map’s share, without reducing the spawn chances of other realms or other maps within the same realm.
Based on this way of distributing probabilities, alternative maps variants wouldn't necessarily change the total spawn chances of any realm. Each realm could keep its 1/20 chance to appear, with variants only redistributing the map’s share internally. If the game worked like this, having multiple variants in a map like Ormond or McMillan wouldn't reduce the spawn chances of smaller realms like Silent Hill or Gideon Meat Plant.

As main survivor (loved Dwight), I enjoy and want more of 2v8, (I like the bigger maps with more people), but honestly, more than having the mode back right now or having it as permanent mode, I'm wishing more updates that can provide more variety to the gameplay.
I've got the same complaints than with the 1v4, but in 2v8 we have less gameplay choices, and over that, there is the issue of the hatches that I find quite anoying (many times, 4-5 partners just hiding and waiting for the hatches, and I think, if instead of hidding they were helping we could just finish the last generator and escape more than 2 people… ???)
So that's it, what I really want are more enhacements in the gameplay. -
I dislike the suggestons.
Killers have already a full arsenal and choices at their reach. Calm spirit and distortion just counter some of those Killer's elements. (And they do at expense of other perks slots).
About distortion, I wouldn't care if it start with 1 charger or 3 charges, like they say, it gets its most value to cancel the Purusuer and to just check what aura readings perks or addons is the killer using, (And if killer is not using aura reading, well, a wasted perk). If it happens the perk reaches to be very nerfed, I always can return to the boons, they have the constraint of being only available to one zone, but they are constant (what are really useful against mirror Myers or interior maps).
I've been a Calmed Spirit user for long time, preciselly I disliked a lot the screams caused by the doctor, although it has helped also many times to hide in Iron Maiden lockers, for long time I've been targeted as noob for wasting a perk slot in that perk but now with Alien's new skill "Ultimate Weapon" looks like the calm spirit is becomming more popular now.
So my experience using Calmed Spirit, although it has helped me a lot, is doesn't make me invulnerable, sure it hides my screams, but I still have to complete generators, rescue partners and move through the map, It's very strange that I don't get spotted by the killer in the whole trial, and many times that ended in chases and hooks. (I'm not very good at looping nor I carry looping perks). And more, I've seen many Doctors that took their time to find me, but when they do, they became like really persistant in hooking me. Besides, its electric powers although don't make me scream, it keeps leveling my madnes up, (Some doctors noticed it to know I'm nearby) also they can keep interrupting my ability to drop pallets, jump windows and heal partners. So I'm sure that this perk is not nullifying Doctors.
I don't think the problem were in those perks, but in the killers who rely a lot of info perks. They are useful, but killers should learn to track survivors other ways. Generators patrolling is the easiest way, crows that flies in the distance, scratch marks, visualizing the arena from elevated points... Also there are other ways like Rancor, killer Instinct and other killers's powers.

I saw Maria dying some 3 or 4 times in Silent Hill 2... At this point I don't see difficult she resurrecting again and being caught by Entity.
Or perhaps the Entity and Silent Hill's curse are university buddies, so they shared some tricks to make James's manifestation of Maria become real again in the Fog realm...

I prefer they give priorities to other changes before than rework the legendary skins system.
- Give more costumes to the licensed characters, like Quentin, Laurie, Yoichi... I feel that force to pay real cash for them, should make them have some more attention. I understand they can't nor will have the same quantity of cosmetics like Dwight or Feng, but something more to add variety.
- Would like they could rework to allow cosmetics for the twin Victor, Knight's ghost soldiers or Nemesis's zombies. Some maybe scarier, others funnier. Or simplier, to can fit with the style of the main killer.
But if they rework the legendary system, I think what they could do, instead of having these special characters, hided as a special costume of another character. I think they could move all the legendaries outfit to a single character slot of "Legendary characters" and have there all of them together, where they can add new outfits too. Like The Legion, that has 4 characters in the same slot, and time by time appears new costume for each one of them.

I don't see it unfair.
First, It looks to me another balanced option for when there is only 1 survivor that has to open the gates, the gates opening when there are several survivors is easy, but when is one alone, it get harder and sometimes even impossible. I refer to all those times when these gates appears too close each other, so Killers can place in positions where he can monitor both gates. So providing the hatch tend to give that extra support (escaping by it, using a key, or using the distraction of the killer looking for it to open a gate).
Also, 3k or 4k doesn't really matters, I tend to play for points so having 30.000 I think it is good wether the last survivor escaped or not. (In those escenarios they neither get too cocky so whatever, if they found hatch, good for them).
The times I slug, tends to be when I see the missing survivor has been lazy (has left people die or has beeing hiding in the map zone far from the generators). I tend to be merciless with these kind of players. But also in these matches I use to spared the life of the "slugged" survivor with hatch or gate (for having to deal with those selfish survivors).
