Estimating ideal chase times
Ok so with the whole Gen Rush thing that everyone (including me sometimes) always complains about people always say that Gens need to be slowed down.
Personally I instead think that Killers that struggle to deal with fast Gens should be sped up so they can more effectively apply pressure, rather than them being given free Pressure from slower gens or something.
But of course in order to even begin to attempt that properly it is required that we define how fast exactly Killers need to be. Unfortunately this cannot be exactly calculated, but with some assumptions being made can be estimated.
Btw a chase here is defined as the time it takes a Killer to hit a Survivor. Not the time to down a Survivor.
First off here are the assumptions being made.
- Travel time is ignored. This includes the Killer patrol times, the time it takes Survivors to reach a gen, ect.
- All Survivors are healed after being unhooked and never before that
- Generators are completed in 2 80 second waves normally. That is to say if the Killer chases 1 person the entire game and never catches them then the last generator will pop in exactly 160 seconds.
- Saving a hooked Survivor stalls the game for 10 seconds per hook
- All Survivors are saved from the hook twice. Thus all Survivors are hooked 3 times for the Killer to win.
- No one has a Key or a Mori
- Perks will not be considered on either side
With these in play the fastest way to calculate it would be to just divide the time it takes to do the gens over the number of hits required.
160/24=6.66666667
The time it takes to hook a downed Survivor (ignoring travel time) is 5 seconds. Since you only hook every other down that's an average of 2.5 seconds. So that leaves about 4 seconds for the chase.
But this isn't right. Gens don't take 160 seconds unless he fails to catch anyone. Thus we need to take into account unhook stalling.
160+(9*10)=250
250/24 = 10.4166667
20.8333333-5 is about 8 seconds. Slightly more reasonable but still not right. We need to take into account healing as well. Healing takes 16 seconds, but 2 Survivors are doing it so it's effectively 32 seconds. We also need to add 20 seconds for the gate opening time.
160+(9*10)+(32*9)+20=558
538/24=23.25
Taking into account hook times this is about 20 seconds. That's fairly reasonable for Killers like Billy and Huntress. But can a Killer like the Wraith or Leatherface really pull that off against reasonably competent Survivors?
Fun fact however, that time of 558 seconds is a little over 9 minutes, meaning that the estimate of most games being 10ish minutes from the dev stats makes sense.
I do know that I'm not including a bunch of things, for example that 160 base time probably would need to be altered based off how those waves are effected by hooks and heals ect, and my assumptions can probably be improved with data to become more accurate. However it's at the very least a useful starting point for getting an idea on what it takes for a Killer to be good.
