If a rank 20 and a rank 4 match up, they match with ranks closer to the rank 4 (or highest rank of the group).

"But then my teammate will have a harder time"

If you're doing it for fun, ranking shouldn't matter. If you're doing it to be competative or boost your friend, then there's an issue.
