You should be able to attempt self unhook if you can abandon.
The changes that where made a while back to not allow self unhook has took away player choices when everyone is down, if everyone left in match is slugged you can abandon, but you cant attempt to unhook yourself if it was your first hook.
in my opinion if the game is giving the abandon option it should also give the self unhook attempts if it is your first hook. I understand why you cant do anytime anymore but if the abandon option is available so should self unhook attempts.
