Does Dead Hard work with Renewal/Second Wind?

If I’m still in the broken status before being healed after being unhooked can I still use Dead Hard? And if so, will it negate Renewal?

I ask because I just had a game and after being unhooked but before I healed completely it didn’t give me the option to DH.
