A Newbies Perspective on Killer Balance
Hi!
This is mostly just a desire to post from riding the new game honeymoon, slowly becoming borderline addicted, need a place to express my excitement and enthusiasm for the game dump post... but I've been really enjoying playing the game and learning, and have been watching a lot of streamers to get my fixes.
One thing that is starting to stick out to me though, are the killers that generally are considered best/worst in their game. As a newb I've been playing and doing well with The Pig, Billy and Trapper. I know my success will be short lived when the strong loopers start to become more prevalent in my games, but after watching a few tier lists and killer breakdowns a couple of things are sticking out to me.
The killers that tend to be strong are the killers that have really good chase, range or anti looping abilities. The obvious letters like Nurse, Blight, Spirit, are extremely strong, but others up there are Wesker, Oni, Huntress, Artist, etc, all tend to have really strong chase abilities or can hit at range. Other characters that get up there are ones with something really powerful, like Plagues anti healing/infection abilities, or Executioners "I just ignore your defences" abilities...
However on the other side, stealth characters, or the traditional "m1 killers" don't tend to do as well as to compensate for their stealth mechanics, as they have weaker chase... Pig, Ghost Face, Shape, Nightmare, Wraith all fall short of top tier with their stealth, and the more basic killers with weak catch and/or down power like Clown, Trickster, Legion, etc all tend to fall to lower tiers. Trappers or slow start characters tend to struggle mightily depending on map, Hag and Nemesis are very map reliant as their own need to set up slows them down too, Trapper meanwhile just RIP. Id never say these characters are bad inherently, especially in lowbie games, but there does seem a pretty solid divide at high levels between strong chasers/ranged characters vs stealth, trap and set up characters.
This does hint that characters that are by design slower and more deliberate in what they do, can be worked around and effectively gen rushed far easier than those that apply pressure by chasing survivors down.... and this does make one think if this is the way the community wants the game to go?
I don't really have a suggestion perce', I just wanted to ask more experienced players about their thoughts in regards to how they'd want DBD killers to evolve. As I believe everyone would hate for existing and future killers to be made into cardboard cutouts of each other, and trend towards being really good at chase because that is what it seems the killers need to be good at...
What it seems to me is running and looping is so effective, this has the effect of pushing killers this way to be better at chase... looping is such a vital and well honed skill, nerfing it would probably be deadly to the life of the game... so can anything be done to mitigate it? Would survivors even want to be forced to hide more? Or is this just the way the game is headed?
If you read this far, thanks! ๐
