Linux, Steam, Epic and EAC implementation

So, it's pretty much confirmed that Easy AntiCheat is implemented differently across platforms. Otzdarva confirmed it on Steam, citing inside information, but refused to elaborate as the discussion was mainly about cheaters.

And, this makes perfect sense. If you're a Linux user (including Steam Deck), your ability to play the game will entirely depend on which store you bought it from. On Steam, the game is bootable, but you will also get booted from all lobbies upon entering a match. On Epic, it just works if you use Heroic Launcher (necessary for Epic Games on Linux, might as well be just Epic).

Steam cites the reason some EAC games do and do not work as the way in which EAC is implemented by the developers, which checks out, from the information above, and the fact that many EAC games actually run perfectly.

So, my main question would be: If there's already a valid implementation, why not just use the work already done for that on Steam instead?

  • Can Epic users run DbD on Linux desktop distros? That's news to me. It's definitely a sore spot for me. DbD is literally the only game I own with EAC that doesn't run on my Linux drive. Every other EAC game I own runs fine with Proton enabled on Steam.

You need to buy it on EG as well if you don't have it.

  • UPDATE: As of 2023/05/07, the game works fine again, on Steam with Proton. Yay for BHVR!
