Dead By Daylight needs a Map Editor

I am going to ask you a simple question that cannot be answer right now. What makes a good DBD map?

We can make guesses, like the map needs to be the right size and needs to have a good amount of loops, but the overall structure of map to make it interesting? No one, even the Devs, have any clue.

When you look DBD's maps, especially the newer ones, they all seem like darts thrown at a dart board. We have Eyrie of Crows then RPD then Midwich then Dead Dawg. These are all different maps, but they all feel like they were designed for their own sake rather the being guided by any core principles.

This is where a map editor becomes so useful. Ignoring the obvious benefit of creating more maps to play on, one of the other benefits that map editors provide is understanding of what makes a good map. In a game like TF2, the map editor has led to many different maps being testing and reviewed. A modern TF2 map like Altitude is so fun because its creator has so many examples to work with.

How do maps with different elevations like a canyon work in DBD? How about a Mall with stores like an indoor map and a middle like an outdoor map? How do walls that killers can m1 over affect a maps balance? How do objects that change when a gen is done change a map?

These are all questions that could be answer by giving the community a map editor. It could also reduce the amount of work needed to create a chapter because you can use one of the community ones. While it may be difficult with DBD's rng system, I do believe that it can and should be done.

  • If they release this, the community will release better maps than the creators because they actually plays the game.
