Killer: The more you kill the harder your matches become. Because you go against better coordinated survivors.
Survivor: The more you escape (excluding hatch) the easier your matches become. Because you play with better coordinated survivors.
As killer you Just need to...kill.. if you're getting kills like Crazy, then the game puts you with some of the best solos or well....SWF's to put some pressure on you.
And the colored number doesn't reflex skill anymore. It's just your time played and pips gained. I would Just consider the grades useful if someone got to rank 1 in the first day of rank reset.
As survivor though, you either escapes a lot and then get useful teammates and some tryhard killers, or you end up in low mmr hell where things can go a little...unlucky for you, it's basically 4 vs 1 ...and the 1 is you.
The visible grades aren’t used in matchmaking at all. They’re really just a function of how much someone played this month, so if you haven’t played in a while your grade will be really low regardless of how good you might be. Likewise it’s possible for someone who plays all the time but for whatever reason isn’t playing all that well to be a really high grade simply by virtue of having played so much.
Like others said above, the matchmaking is a hidden MMR rating that is based mainly on escapes and kills. If a survivor is killed their MMR goes down and the killers goes up, and vice versa if the survivor escapes. How much it goes up or down depends on the relative ratings of the two players and other possible factors (e.g. supposedly the first person killed has a bigger swing in rating than the last person killed because once two survivors are killed it becomes significantly harder for the third and fourth person to escape.) Also you have separate ratings for every killer. (I think it keeps a general rating for you as a killer overall and a modifier based on your performance with each specific killer, but close enough. 🤷♂️)
