They are not far enough past the threshold to escape, but they are not in the game's playable boundaries enough to be hit.

While you may say "oh, but they're as good as safe (escaped) anyway," they can heal up without repercussion and can re-enter the game to rescue, and cannot be forced out of the match like normal.
