Something is wrong with it, it allows you to rank up too easily. Resulting in nearly everybody getting funneled into red ranks.
Red ranks should be where the top players are. Not where 65% of the playerbase ends up through playtime.
I know you're pain all too well. I'm rank 11 and it seems that all I ever get are purple and red rank survivors. At this rate this game has no hope of attracting new players with this kind of a matchmaking system. At the very least put in a custom mode with bots, at least that way there's some fun to be had while you learn the ropes instead of being wrecked over and over.
