No first hook timer

I'm confused, what perk caused the first two survivors to be hooked not to get a "first hook" timer? One survivor got hooked (he immediately went into struggle; no first hook timer), I saved them, got my deliverance perk charged and then I got hooked. I got no "first hook" timer either and was unable to use deliverance. Since the Bubba was camping the basement we all died. I am unfamiliar with a perk or add on which eliminates the first hook status and trumps deliverance.
