Totem RNG

Whenever I play, the first totem getting cleansed always turns out to be undying. It's been consistent for about 20 games now - the numbers doesn't add up. Are totems spots decided upon cleansing or upon loading into the game.?

Upon cleansing: A survivor cleanses a totem -> RNG decides which HEX is affected.

Upon loading into the game: All totems are assigned a position --> RNG decides which HEX is placed where.

In terms of fairness, It SHOULD be the latter. However, if RNG decides which HEX is affected, the odds of different perks being cleansed could be tweaked (which would explain why perks such as haunted grounds often go before other hexes). I'm just looking for facts here, no speculating please <3

  • From a anecdotal standpoint, my undying usually gets cleansed first.

From a mechanical standpoint though, the only way that undying could have a higher cleanse rate than other Hexes is if the totem that's cleansed is calculated AFTER the cleanse, and doesn't load in when you spawn. This doesn't make sense though because we know for sure that NOED spawns randomly after all the gens are done. Likewise, a Undying totem that spawns in the beginning of the game will never change into a NOED totem.

From a balance standpoint, Ruin / Undying is busted.

  • @lowiq Exactly!

But I think NOED could be a special case. Since NOED cannot spawn unless certain conditions are met, it would not be a stretch to think that NOED has its own spawn/cleanse mechanic. I don't think it's likely, but definitely doable. It would certainly be awkward to have post-cleanse calculation on some totems, and pre-cleanse calculation on others.
