Trouble deciding which Killer to play? Dying to Killers whose powers you don’t understand? Whichever role you’re playing, this guide is for you.

To Kill or be Killed provides a (mostly) objective take on the strengths and weaknesses of each of Dead by Daylight’s 20 Killers for players of both roles. The goal of this guide is not to rate the relative strength of the different characters, but simply to explain each Killer’s personal playstyle and unique traits so that readers can choose a Killer who is fun for them based on the style of gameplay that they enjoy. You will also find information for Survivor players on how to recognise who the Killer is before coming face-to-face with them, as well as what Survivors need to be aware of when dealing with a Killer’s unique power.
Click the link above to download the full guide.
The guide is in the form of an interactive PDF, written and designed by myself. I also created the backgrounds, but not the character art, which is taken straight from the game's files.
Hope you enjoy, and good luck to all other entrants!

Hello everyone, thank you for taking your time to check out my Dead by Daylight Basics Guide. In this video I will be talking about the different ways you can earn bloodpoints, Iridescent Shards how they can be used and much more!
This is the first tutorial I've ever made, I hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful.
My main language isn't English but I hope everything will be understandable :)

Introduction
As a survivor main, I feel that there are too many guides that explain how to loop and/or counter looping, but practically none that explain how to stealth and/or counter it. Stealth is, I would argue, more important than looping, because whereas looping may work to extend a chase, stealth prevents you from getting into one in the first place. This guide will teach you the basics of stealth, so that you may escape without ever being in danger.
Remember: you can't be hooked if you're never found.
Survivors
As a survivor, there are four things you'll want to take into account: Point of View (POV), Field of View (FOV), scratch marks, and sound.
Let's start with POV. Killers play in first person, meaning the camera is inside their player model (specifically, just below the neck). Their player model also spins while they look around. As a survivor, on the other hand, you play in third person, meaning your camera is above and around you, but your torso moves when you look around. This gives you a tactical advantage when stealthing. By knowing where their blind spots are, you can sneak away without being seen, which brings us to FOV.
FOV is a measure of how much you can see in front of you. As a survivor you have a wide FOV, but killers have an extremely reduced FOV. Combined with their first person POV, killers have many blind spots that you can take advantage of.

https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/J579MMNP80LV/default-fov-survivor.jpg
These screenshots were taken simultaneously by both the survivor and killer, with the survivor just outside the killer's FOV on either side. As you can see, the killer doesn't have to turn much to lose sight of a survivor.
Scratch marks are bright red marks that show up on the terrain (ground, walls, trees, etc.) whenever you run. They're only visible to the killer and slowly disappear over the span of 10 seconds. If the killer hasn't seen you yet, leaving scratch marks is a dead giveaway that you're around.
https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/XM6WQ2PYB8UQ/scratch-marks.jpg
The survivor ran a straight line from the wall to the tree (survivor is outlined in red in the second screenshot). Note the scatter pattern of the scratch marks and also how they don't necessarily go on every single obstacle along the way.
Sound is arguably the most important detail of all. It doesn't matter if the killer can't see you when you're making as much noise as a chainsaw. Running to vault through a window or get into a locker, dropping a pallet, and falling from a great height all make noise that the killer can hear. Furthermore, rushed actions create “noise bubbles”, visible only to the killer, that alert them to where the event occurred.
Keep in mind, being stealthy doesn't mean standing in the same spot forever. Killers don't usually search the same spot twice, but they do usually search each spot once. The longer you stay still, the more likely it is they'll search where you are. Furthermore, stillness crows will spawn if you're staying in the same place for too long, immediately giving away your location to the killer if they're nearby. If you stand still for too long, the crows will give away your position no matter where you are on the map.

Three stillness crows flying around a survivor. Even though his choice of hiding spot makes him almost invisible even when looking directly at him, the crows immediately give him away.
Lockers
Practically no one ever searches lockers. That alone makes them the ultimate hiding spot – the one that is almost never searched. However, they're not without risk.
Cons
- Opening and closing the locker makes some noise even if you don't run into it. However, getting into it slowly won't trigger a noise bubble.
- Getting into a locker is very visible, even from afar. Make sure to choose the right one.
- If you sprint in front of the locker, stop, and then get into it slowly, the scratch marks will still give you away.
- You can't see any auras while in a locker.
- The killer can grab you while you're getting into or coming out of a locker
- If the killer grabs you, you will immediately be put into the dying state.
Pros
- The killer can't see your aura while you're in a locker.
- Lockers almost completely muffle any injured noises you make.
- Your character model is completely hidden while in a locker.

Scratch marks give survivors away if they run to a locker.
Tips
- Rotating your player model to better blend in with your surroundings is important. Just because you're hidden while facing one way doesn't mean you're hidden while facing the other. Remember, your entire torso moves with the camera.
- Some perks can hide your scratch marks from the killer under certain conditions.
- Use Iron Will to avoid making noise while injured.
- Aura-reading perks like Alert, Kindred, and Dark Sense are your friends. If you know where the killer is going, you can be somewhere else when they get there.
- Urban Evasion makes you crouch-walk as quickly as you walk upright. This can often allow you to crouch-walk around a tall obstacle and remain hidden even while the killer is searching it.
- If you're not sure you've been spotted, it's usually better to give away your position by running away than it is to take a surprise hit from the killer. Wait until the killer is facing away from you to start sprinting, if you can, to buy yourself some time.
- It's always better to wait and see if a killer searches lockers before trying to hide in one.
- Do not, under any circumstances, get into a locker when facing the Huntress. Even if the player doesn't have a habit of searching them, they will inevitably have to interact with one to refill her hatchets.
- Always keep in mind what routes to take if and when the killer comes to check out your location, depending on where the killer comes from.
- Being proactive is important. If you wait until the killer is right on you, there will be nowhere for you to hide.
Killers
As a killer, there are likewise four things you need to take into account: POV, FOV, the Red Stain (RS), and sound.
As a killer, your POV is locked into first person. This means that if you don't tilt the camera just right, survivors can and will, quite literally, sneak past you right under your nose. Depending on where you are at any given moment, you may want to tilt the camera up or down.
- While patrolling, the camera should be tilted in such a way that you can see the horizon, plus twice the height a survivor would have while standing at that distance.
- While chasing someone, though, you might want to tilt the camera down a little, so you can find your prey if they try to sneak past you.
Your tight FOV can be an issue, particularly inside buildings. If you lose track of a survivor and don't see any more scratch marks, try looking on the other side of any windows, behind rubble, around the doorway you just walked through, or in nearby lockers. Keep in mind survivors walk slowly, so they can't have gotten far.
https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/XOSYOMKKFIIM/hiding-in-corner.jpg
A survivor is hiding just out of sight to the right, but he's impossible to see from this position.
The RS is, quite literally, a red stain on the ground that shows where you're facing, visible only to the survivors. This can be an issue if you know a survivor is nearby, but aren't sure where they are. However, it can be turned to your advantage as well under the right circumstances. If you're in an area with a lot of tall line-of-sight (LOS) blockers, you can turn around and walk backwards, hiding your stain. Survivors who are hiding in the area may be fooled and adjust their position in such a way that they become visible to you.
Sound is key in Dead by Daylight. Nothing is more important for finding survivors than hearing the noises they make. When a survivor performs a rushed action or misses a skill check within 50 meters of you, an explosion SFX will be played and you will see both a “noise bubble” and an arrow pointing to where the event occurred. Furthermore, lockers squeak very faintly when being opened slowly. Survivors also make noise when falling from great heights, moan while injured, and breathe louder shortly after running. Keep an ear out for the sound of leaves rustling on maps that have tall grass.
Tips
- If you vault through a window while chasing a survivor, they will sometimes attempt to vault back through it. You lose collision after vaulting, so you won't see them as they'll be completely inside you. If you lose sight of a survivor when this happens, chances are they're inside you and waiting to vault back. Quickly turn around and perform a quick attack (tap M1) to hit them.
- Whispers is a good perk if you want to know which areas are devoid of survivors. However, if there are one or more survivors in the area, the Entity's voice can be distracting and muffle some of the other sounds you want to hear.
- Shadowborn provides a permanent FOV bonus. It can be useful if you feel like the FOV is too tight.
- Scratch marks indicate the path a survivor took while running, but don't be fooled by them. Just because they end at a window, for example, doesn't necessarily mean the survivor went through it.
- Discordance can tell you which generators survivors are working on since they will always try to repair generators in groups at some point in the trial. However, the fact that you're using this perk will become obvious to them over time.
- Be aware of when survivors are using Iron Will, which will stop them from making noise while injured. If you lose sight of a survivor who has Iron Will, don't panic. Look for the puddles of blood that they leave behind.
- Stridor is an amazing perk for finding survivors, especially if they're injured. Their breathing sounds and injured moans will be amplified, allowing you to find them more easily.
- If you lose sight of a survivor, check your corners. It's very easy for a survivor to hide just beside a doorway and then sneak out behind you.
- Some survivor perks can create noise bubbles at specific locations – one of them even creates scratch marks. If you're looking around a noise bubble but can't find anyone, assume they're using one of those.
