I would love to go into a different gaming style and have dbd on pc. But I can not believe you have to buy half of the characters is there anyway around it.

You can use Iridescent Shards, earned via playing matches within the game, to unlock all of the non-licensed survivors and killers. This method is the only other way to unlock the characters besides buying them with real currency. However, you still will need to spend actual money on purchasing the licensed killers and survivors should you want them.
My apologies if I misunderstand your question, but it is 9000 Iridescent Shards for one non-licensed Survivor or Killer, and the developers estimate that it takes roughly around 30 hours of in-game time to gather that many shards.
If you are currently playing DBD on a console, I think that you would benefit from switching over to PC. The game runs much smoother, and updates are released far quicker.
You can get DbD on pc for 10$. DLCs are also often sold with heavy discount.ü
Right now it´s part of a Humble Bundle.
Dead by Daylight usually costs about 20 Dollars. You can wait on the next Steam Sale to get it for about 10 Dollars. Currently, it's part of the Humble Bundle, costs about the same but includes a couple of other games also, including Friday the 13th.
Included in that are 3 DLCs: Last Breath (Nurse, Nea Karlsson), A Lullaby For The Dark (Huntress, David King) & Left Behind (Bill Overbeck + L4D-themed cosmetics for Dwight, Meg, Claudette, Jake)
Each Chapter DLC costs about 7 Dollars. Chapter DLCs that have dev-original Characters can also be bought with Iridescent Shards (9000 per Character), those are currently Of Flesh And Mud (Hag, Ace) & Spark Of Madness (Doctor, Feng).
LEATHERFACE is a special DLC, you only get The Cannibal and it costs about 4 Dollars.
All other DLCs are purely for cosmetics.
If you are interested its in a humble bundle atm with quite a few other games depending on if you have the others.
Steam sales are generally about 4 times a year, Spring, Summer, fall and Winter but DBD also sometimes have sales on there own.
Use shards, I recommend buying leatherface for BBQ in the start though if you wanna play killer.
As survivor it doent matter anyway, you can play claudette your whole life and unlock perks via shrine
