in the archives challenges do I need to specifically select a challenge to have it unlocked ? or if I unlock it even if I did not select while completing another challenge that I did select , it it still would auto-unlock and just go to the next challenge to be unlocked ?

You have to select a challenge every time you want to do one, once you finish it, you will need to go back into the archives and select a new one manually. It does not auto progress down the web sadly!
