Skill Check Great idea

Since Survivor's constantly have to re-calibrate their skill check timing for lag in each new game, would it be possible to make the first skill check always in the center of the screen and one of the longer timed skill checks. I find I often miss the very first skill check in a match, not because I am bad but because it will usually be off to one side and one of the very short instant skill checks. Since killers have no skill checks and no precision button pushing and no lag in their gameplay it seems it might be a nice thing to give the survivors a little consideration when it comes to new matches and the added dexterity needed to hit skill checks.

Also would it be possible to maybe add a sliver of "good" space before the white "great" skill check area? It is also frustrating when the screen shows you hit a great skill check but you still blow the generator because of lag.

  • "Since killers have no skill checks and no precision button pushing and no lag in their gameplay..."

We have to juggle 4 survivors. Our "skill check" is if we can split our attention in several directions at once. And we get cucked by lag plenty of times with whiffs and failed grabs due to dedicated servers.

I personally have never had too much of an issue with skill checks since dedicated servers. Are you playing on Console? Do they not have dedicated servers there yet?

  • Killers don't exactly have no lag to their inputs anymore, see "Gen grabbing".

Skill checks were meant to be a way of providing info to the killer in a discrete way. If skill checks had ever been treated seriously by the devs, half the aura reading perks that so many people hate would never have been necessary. It seems to have never occurred to devs that the slap jack style of skill check would eventually become second nature to players and turn into an attention check instead.

If skill checks had been made to constantly evolve with a player, so that they weren't a 99% guarantee after several hundred hours, then extra info from aura reading would be largely unnecessary. As players hit certain "survivor time played" milestones, skill checks should've evolved with them to continually provide a challenge. I. E. At 500 hours, you start getting misplaced skill check locations Ala doctor. At 2k (or maybe a bit more), skill checks should come in all sorts of varieties mixing doctor effects, overcharge, lullaby, plus several interesting community ideas over the years (reverse spin, flickering needle, etc).

If killers got semi-regular information from skill checks, perks like bbq and Discordance wouldn't have been necessary, or could've been implemented somewhat differently. Survivors would also have more agency over the effects of that info. You know when you blow a Gen and can take steps to protect yourself... You don't know that the killer got a notification when another player tapped the Gen you're on, or saw you when he hooked that guy (though I imagine we all just assume bbq is being used by now).

  • Skillchecks depend on your framerate, if you have laggy/inconsistent skillchecks you might need to change something to make the game run smoother.

  • After hundreds of hours of play and thousands of skillchecks I know for certain that there is lag or latency issues, they simply are not as responsive each game. You do not push the button and that is where the computer registers you hit, it is milliseconds later. Sometimes skillchecks are impossible because the needle stops moving and then appears on the other side of the safe margin.

I would also like a drop shadow placed behind the white of the skillcheck. Sometimes the skillcheck appears over something entirely white, like a fire and it is impossible to see the icon. A dropshadow would make the skillcheck standout.
